Nicely Done

Caught you when you were going over it on livestream, I really like the idea of you capturing that kind of stuff, interesting for the rest of us to see at least part of the process

Nicely Done

Classic Sonny Rollins piece, a great bebop tune, the head sounded good, and well put together. The only comment I have really, is that the guitar felt a little off when it was comping during the solos. It's hard to tell, but I think it may be just an issue of coordination with the piano. I think it just got a little heavy because they both ended up comping at the same spots in some points. Tone sounded great, nice balance, and the drummer did a good job rolling with the changes and responding to the solos.

It's well done

It just kinda sounds like it should be used in some mii game though, haha. Whether you take that as a compliment or insult, it's still a nice piece.

Awesome Job, as always

Loved the trumpet, as always too. Nice lip work, haha. But why does every trumpet player I know use reason? Just kidding, it's a good program, I know, just seems like an odd coincidence. With your recording, are you recording straight into the program, or using another program to do so? Because I've done recordings for personal stuff using audacity, and it's really good at getting past even the worst mic's flaws, and really getting a nice clean sound.

sorohanro responds:

Thanx man.
I record in other programs.
Check Mu.Lab Free, works like magic :))

Quite Well Done

I commend you for using only 8 players and actually choosing to place an oboe in such a small arrangement. For anyone who reviewed before me or listens to this, and who is not that well oriented in the ensemble world, the oboe is an impossible instrument to tune. There's an old joke: How do you get two oboe players to play in tune? Shoot one. I felt that this had a good sound and balance throughout 99.9% of the piece, but there are a few places where some instruments speak out a little more strongly than others, where personally I would've had them quiet down a little more. Part of it may just be the player, I know, I've done it in large ensembles and quartets, trios, etc. Around...4:54 I believe, there is a crescendo on those strings. The note is played well, but the tricky thing with crescendos is timing. Really, I personally feel as if they rushed a little too much into that crescendo. It should be a little more gradual, and then about a measure, or if you have the luxury, two, measures from the end of that crescendo, bring it up so that it's almost like an instant step up or two steps up in dynamics. They're very little things though, and I had to rack my brain just to think of them, so overall, it's a job well done.

robomanus responds:

Oboe :D Everyone has got problems with this instrument. In a low scale it's very disturbing. Higher it will always be heard. A flute is more quiet, so the oboe wins sometimes. But the fact is, that this is small group, and there is only one of each woodwind, so it's hard to make it sound good. Thank you for your opinion. :D

5 Bombed

Must resist urge to keep hitting 5.....about the only thing I can say is that it didn't have enough "backbone" for my upper crust taste, I like a little percussion with my melodies. Keeps a beat going, makes you into it.

Theledge93 responds:

thank you so much. I'm glad you liked it. you didn't have to review too!

Wow!

Once again, what a great sound out of that trumpet! Just imagine if you were using a flugelhorn on that, and how much more you could pull out of it. Nicely done, as always. Looking forward to even more great trumpet pieces on the way. (And I myself am thinking of a Bb trumpet, possibly. I originally wanted to, but at the time when I started learning T-Bone and euphonium, I didn't have any embouchre for it. We'll see though, eh?). 10/10 5/5

sorohanro responds:

Eh... flugelhorn... I'm planing to get one... but for now just planning :(
Thanx for review.
As for trumpet, don't give up to the idea, you can find a cheap trumpet (even under 100$) good enough to fool around. I use to have a pocket trumpet (under 100$, Chinese) and wasn't bad, I use to play on jazz gigs with it.

Holy Lord

This is one of the best asian styled pieces I've yet heard...great style, dynamics, instrumentation, melodies, everything. I gotta say, first thing I think of when hearing this, is probably WW2, the japanese Imperial army swoops down upon a squad of marines and locks them in a deadly half gunfight, half close combat fight. Brilliant.

Good!

1:06, I felt that with that however many repetition it was, there could've ben a tad more change up from the first initial riff in that section, but I won't bust your balls over it. It's sufficiently heavy without losing all melody, and it has enough change ups to keep it interesting, as well as enough instruments to fill the ear, without making it overflow and sound bad. This is definitely a great little piece, congratulations!

I DO like this. Buuut...

I feel that the transition between the "First" and "Second" part is a little...well, it leaves the listener out to dry, if that makes sense, and it's something everyone hears, except in their own music (I admit that too, and I try not to, but I am nowhere near perfect, or that good), so if you had, instead of just doing a fade, then continuing to the second theme, left a crash or a reverb that stuck for a few seconds and then crescendo up that second part, it would be much more ear pleasing.

Witty Comment and/or Personal Anecdote
